What Is Dentofacial Orthopedics?

Dentofacial orthopedics focuses on the growth and development of the jaws and facial structures. Because children are still growing, certain orthodontic problems can sometimes be addressed more effectively when they are identified at the right stage of development.

Depending on your child's needs, treatment may involve an orthodontic appliance, braces, or simply monitoring growth until the ideal time to begin treatment.

Why Timing Matters

Not every child needs early orthodontic treatment. In fact, many children are best served by observation until more permanent teeth have erupted.

An orthodontic evaluation allows Dr. LaHaye to monitor jaw growth, tooth eruption, crowding, bite development, and other concerns so treatment can begin when it provides the greatest benefit.

This is one reason the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
