Retainers: Protect Your Smile for a Lifetime
Your orthodontic treatment may be finished, but keeping your smile straight requires retention. Teeth can shift throughout life, which is why consistent retainer wear is essential for protecting your result.
Nighttime for a Lifetime
After your initial full-time retention period, wear your retainers every night unless Dr. LaHaye gives you different instructions. Long-term nighttime wear is the best way to maintain the smile you worked hard to achieve.
Caring for Your Retainers
- Remove your retainers when eating and place them in their case. Never wrap them in a napkin or tissue.
- Keep retainers away from pets. Dogs especially love to chew them.
- Clean your retainers regularly with cool or lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, which can distort the material.
- Always store your retainers in their case when you're not wearing them.
- Keep your retainers away from excessive heat, including hot cars and dishwashers.
- Bring your retainers with you to your orthodontic appointments when requested.

If Your Retainer Is Lost, Broken or Doesn't Fit
Contact LaHaye Orthodontics as soon as possible. Don't wait for your teeth to noticeably shift. A retainer that is cracked, distorted, lost, or no longer fits properly should be evaluated and replaced when necessary.
Lifetime Retainers
Keeping your smile straight shouldn't become a lifelong worry. LaHaye Orthodontics offers our Lifetime Retainers program to make replacing your retainers easier and help protect your orthodontic result for years to come.
If you have questions about your retainers or notice any change in how they fit, contact our Thibodaux or Houma office.
